Why Is Hip Evaluation Important?

Hip dysplasia is one of the most common inherited orthopedic diseases in dogs, particularly in large and giant breeds. As the condition progresses, it can lead to pain, stiffness, reduced mobility, and the development of osteoarthritis.

What Happens During a PennHIP Examination?

A PennHIP evaluation is performed under sedation or short general anesthesia to ensure complete muscle relaxation and obtain the most accurate measurements.

During the procedure, three specialized X-ray images of the hips are taken using the standardized PennHIP protocol. These radiographs can then be submitted to the na University of Pennsylvania, where they are assessed to determine the degree of hip laxity and estimate the dog’s risk of developing hip dysplasia.
