The Animal Blood Bank is a unique service proudly offered at Buba Veterinary Clinic in Zagreb. The aim of this service is to ensure the timely availability of blood products for animals in need of emergency or planned transfusions, significantly improving treatment outcomes and the safety of our beloved pets.
What is an animal blood bank?
An animal blood bank is a specialized storage facility for blood products such as packed red blood cells (erythrocytes) and fresh frozen plasma. These products are used to treat anemia, shock, bleeding, and are often required before or after certain surgeries.
Who are the blood donors?
Our heroes are voluntary blood donors – dogs and cats. To become a blood donor, a pet must meet specific health criteria. For cats, determining the blood type before the first transfusion is especially important to avoid potential reactions. For dogs, although not mandatory, we also recommend blood typing to achieve the best possible transfusion outcomes. We handle all blood products with the utmost ethical care and follow strict safety protocols in collection and storage.
